Before you go

Keep one ear open! You’re sharing the trail with faster hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. Skip the earbuds (or wear just one) so you can hear someone coming up behind you, then step aside and let them by.
Park early. Small lots fill by mid-morning on weekends. Have a second trailhead in mind.
Water and shoes with tread. Bring water every time, even on a short hike. Everyday sneakers slip on dirt and leaves, so wear shoes with real tread.
Ticks in summer, slick leaves in fall. Both are fine, just check yourself after and go slow on the downhills.
